ACE Academies
Metro Detroit Aerospace Career Education (ACE) Academy
For more than 30 years, the Metro Detroit Aerospace Career Education (ACE) Academy has opened doors to aerospace careers by introducing students to the skills, knowledge, and opportunities in the industry. What began as a local initiative has grown into a comprehensive foundation focused on building clear, accessible pathways into high-demand aerospace careers.
The Metro Detroit ACE Academy introduces high school students to the exciting world of aviation and aerospace through hands-on learning, career exploration, and real-world experiences. Designed as a first-level exposure program, ACE helps students discover how aviation works, why it matters, and what career opportunities are possible.

The program intentionally reaches students from communities with limited access to aerospace opportunities, helping talented young people see themselves in high-demand, future-focused careers. Student feedback consistently shows a significant increase in interest in aerospace careers after completing the academy, highlighting the program’s lasting impact.

Based on survey feedback, 57% of the ACE Academy participants indicated they were not interested in aerospace careers before attending the academy. At the conclusion of the academy, over 85% of the students stated that the week's experiences increased their interest in pursuing a career in aerospace.
The ACE Academy continues to grow, expanding its reach and inspiring the next generation of aerospace professionals by exposing, engaging, and educating students about what’s possible when opportunity meets preparation. This program is made possible with the support of our sponsor, partners, and volunteers.
ACE Academy Program Model
Day 1:
We welcome an inspiring cohort of students from across Metro Detroit and the country who are curious, motivated, and ready to explore the world of aerospace. With hands-on exposure to aerospace careers, mentorship from pilots and military professionals, and immersive learning opportunities, this week promises to be transformational.
Day 2:
Our second day of the ACE is packed with inspiration, exploration, and real-world exposure!
We begin our journey touring museums, where students explore historic aircraft, learn about aviation’s evolution, and see firsthand how past innovations are shaping the future of flight. From vintage planes to advanced exhibits, the museum tour sparks curiosity and deepens our students’ understanding of aviation history and engineering.
Next, we take an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour and — a powerful glimpse into the global cargo aviation industry. Students witness the precision, scale, and teamwork it takes to operate a major airline logistics hub. The visit opens eyes to career paths in aviation maintenance, aircraft dispatch, flight operations, logistics, and more.
Day 3:
Tour of Michigan’s most iconic aviation hubs —Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
Students are immersed in the world of military aviation and national defense, engaging directly with service members who share their experiences and showcase aircraft, flight equipment, and operations. It is a powerful reminder of the discipline, teamwork, and dedication required to serve and fly at the highest level.
Day 4:
Tour of Detroit Metro Airport, where students experience the dynamic world of commercial aviation from the inside out. From advanced flight planning to crew coordination and aircraft logistics, Delta’s operations leave our students in awe. They gain insight into the real-time decision-making, technology, and teamwork required to keep flights safe and efficient across the globe.
Also, tour the U.S. Air Marshal's Detroit Field Office, where students explore the critical role these federal agents play in protecting air travel post-9/11. Students learn about career pathways in homeland security, aviation law enforcement, and the pivotal mission of safeguarding passengers and crews in the skies.
Day 5:
Our final day is a perfect mix of learning, hands-on activity, and celebration.
Students participate in the Aircraft Assembly Challenge, where they apply teamwork and technical skills in a real-world simulation; Model Aircraft Presentations, showcasing creativity, problem-solving, and presentation skills; an overview of aviation college programs; and civil engineering and aviation maintenance technician career opportunities.
Closing this day with a post exam, student survey, student and parent testimonials, and a graduation ceremony — recognizing the achievements, growth, and bright futures of our students.
